Shirley Woodson/Artists
ARTISTS ON THE CUTTING EDGE
Shirley Woodson is a veteran of the arts and is an award-winning artist, a gallerist, educator, administrator and much more. She has mentored many of today's artists and continues to do so while at the same time creating her own art, writing for art journals, creating poetry, and current president of the National Conference of Artists, Michigan Chapter.
Shirley shares one of her inspired poems, as she pays homage to two of the greats, Betty Carter and Betye Saar. Shirley allows us to know what is possible if we are dedicated to our art in it's many forms.

BETTY CARTER SINGS for BETYE SAAR #2
Rip, wrangle, swing, push the tune and glide
Roll it out to rhythms afar free from madrigal
Open the stars with true blue notes and delicious scatting
And tell me the truth.
Sing to my Red Room
Serenade my Jemima in Full Service
Sooth my questioning of predatory silences
Show me how we keep the magic in a watchful, joyous realm
Choreograph and concertize and sway
Push the tune, open the window to see stars on fire
Experience our hipness as methodology
In our repertoire of truth telling
